Feed More HQ

Feed More is Central Virginia’s primary hunger-relief organization, responsible for collecting, preparing, and distributing food to neighbors across the region. For years, however, operations were spread across multiple single-story buildings—facilities that were fragmented, inefficient, and increasingly misaligned with the scale and complexity of the mission. Low ceiling heights, constrained layouts, and operational friction limited efficiency and made long-term planning difficult.

Hourigan partnered with Feed More to reframe the challenge not as a traditional expansion, but as an adaptive planning and operational strategy focused on long-term performance. Serving as a single point of accountability, Hourigan led a fully integrated solution spanning property disposition, site acquisition, planning, design, and construction.

The existing property was strategically positioned for sale and ultimately sold for more than its initial valuation, enabling reinvestment into a purpose-built facility in Villa Park, Henrico County. Hourigan then delivered a 105,000-square-foot high-bay distribution center designed around facility optimization—consolidating operations while improving efficiency, flexibility, and workflow.

The new facility brings warehousing, cold storage, production, and administrative functions into a single, highly efficient system on approximately 10 acres of fully developed land. Approximately 70,000 square feet of dry, frozen, and refrigerated space supports high-bay racking and streamlined logistics, while an interior mezzanine and ground-floor support areas accommodate offices, training, volunteers, sorting, and packing—improving coordination across every operational function. Though the total square footage is comparable to Feed More’s former footprint, the facility’s performance has been fundamentally reengineered, reducing handling time and operational strain while increasing overall throughput.

Designed with longevity and responsibility in mind, the facility incorporates sustainable planning and construction practices intended to minimize environmental impact while supporting Feed More’s mission. Thoughtful strategies address everything from pollutant management to urban heat reduction, reflecting an approach that balances operational excellence with environmental stewardship.

More than a building, the new Feed More facility represents a renewed commitment to the communities it serves. By creating a modern, efficient, and resilient operational hub, Feed More has strengthened its ability to respond to hunger across Central Virginia—today and as needs evolve. The project stands as a testament to the organization’s dedication to collaboration, adaptability, and building the infrastructure needed to support a hunger-free future.
